    Fishermen of the Puerto Rico inlet live off fishing and breeding and raising shellfish. This activity produces exploitable and non-exploitable resources, some of which end up on the beach or nearby garbage dumps.

     

    Main Goal:

    Help in improving solid waste management in the Puerto Rico populated center by seeking knowledge application by the target population as well as the active participation of the population and local authorities in order to improve the quality of life of the population and contribute to the preservation of the environment.

    Source of funding: Miskimayo.

    Scope of intervention:

    Puerto Rico in Sechura, Piura.

    Duration: May 2019 – November 2019.

    Expected Results:

    • Decrease environmental pollution through the correct disposal of waste by increasing recycling for reducing solid waste disposed in garbage dumps.
    • Foster creation and/or improvement of recyclers associations or groups.
    • Raise awareness and provide knowledge to the population about environment preservation by contributing to changing habits regarding waste generation.
    • Contribute to improving environmental conditions and the quality of life of the population, through the promotion and generation of knowledge about infectious and parasitic diseases caused by an incorrect waste management.
    • Promote among the population the idea that a decrease of environmental pollution (air, land, water and noise) can be achieved through the implementation of infrastructure for a correct disposal of solid waste (landfills and others).
    • Foster the recovery of areas deteriorated by solid waste.

    Achievements:

    • Training workshops aimed at the population, vegetable gardens in schools, pressurized irrigation systems for the gardens.
    • Training a group of recyclers as a pilot for segregation at the source.
    • Commercialization of solid waste by a group of recyclers, installation of preventive panels informing about environmental care in Puerto Rico.
