Decreased anemia in children under 5 years old in the district of Moquegua, Peru

    Anemia in Peru is most frequently due to a low intake of iron in the diet. Moquegua does not escape this problem that affects children´s capacity to learn, their psychomotor development as well as their performance in class, damaging their potential capacity for development. PRISMA designed this intervention in order to increase iron intake in the children´s diets by promoting changes in dietary habits among the population less than three years old, based on available products in the district as well as promoting the application and compliance to the treatment protocol recently modified by the Ministry of Health in terms of multimicronutrient use in children 6 to 36 months, and strengthening the capacity of health workers and other authorities to improve the local management of child nutrition.

    Project objective:

    To reduce anemia in children under 36 months of age in the district of Moquegua, province of Mariscal Nieto using a strategy that involves participation of a variety of social actors including voluntary health promoters.

    Specific objectives:

    • Increase intake of iron rich foods in the diet of children 36 months and under
    • Promote use and compliance with multimicronutrient use among children 6 to 36 months as established by the Ministry of health.
    • Strengthen the capacity of local authorities to better manage child nutrition.

    Intervention area:

    314 children from 3 to 59 months of age, 900 parents and caregivers, community health promoters, social organization´s leaders and health personnel in 28 peri urban communities located within the territory of San Antonio, San Francisco and Mariscal Nieto health establishments in the district of Moquegua.

    14 months (February 2016 to March 2017)
